The legend has it that Halong Bay was formed by a group of dragons landing down after finishing their task of helping the locals to drive away invaders, as revealed in its name " the Bay of the descending dragons". Scientifically, the Bay is one of the most extraordinary limestone formations known to human being in the world. It has gone through a total period of around 400 millions years from being formed , commenced by the ocean, raised up during the tectonic period, eroded and evolved itself to the present day with numerous caves, grottoes and lagoons, turning itself into one of natural wonders of the world and a natural museum of karst geology and limestone in the open air.
Covering a total area of 1553 square kilometers with approximately 2,000 islands and islets, the Bay is totally a colossal example of how the mother of nature is capable of creating and especially the core of the Bay where the density is at its utmost with 775 islands on only an area of 334 square kilometers. Amazing in its size and number, the Bay is not just only a place of geological values but it also carries with it a great historical archive when various archeological researches have pointed out the remains of cultures dated back all the way to 18,000 BC.
Peaceful, calm, mystical in its appearance and yet full of surprises and amazes when being looked from different angles, the Bay today, has become a very popular destination among the locals as well as foreigners of various nationalities as it is located only 100 miles North East of Hanoi and so accessible by road.
